AfriCana Village is a proposed African-Caribbean Canadian Cultural Heritage Tourism destination on Toronto’s Waterfront by Parliament & Queens Quay area. It is a social enterprise public/private partnership to create jobs and increase tourism attraction assets in Toronto.
“AfriCana Village is alive and well and moving forward”, says President and Founder Trevor David. “We have been encouraged by the decision of the City of Toronto’s Economic Development and Tourism Department and the Province’s Ministry of Tourism decision to form a steering committee and or advisory group to explore ways and means to bring this Grand Vision to reality”.
AfriCana Village is projected to create 2,000 cultural jobs with 500 jobs earmarked for high potential “at risk” youths. They will be trained in Hospitality Tourism/ Culinary Program at George Brown and placed at AfriCana Village upon its completion. AfriCana Village also intends to collaborate with George Brown and to apprenticeship 50 “at risk” youth to work in the building of AfriCana Village so that they will have the skills and experience to move- on and work in the construction industry.
“This is the kind of innovative and creative employment generating projects the city, province and country needs to alleviate poverty”, says Mr. David. “We see the kind of macro- economic impact that Caribana has over 2 weeks despite its bungling; can you imagine what a year round Afri-centric/Caribbean destination on the waterfront can generate in terms of employment and income?” adds Mr. David.
Projections for AfriCana Village:
• $500 million dollars per annum by the 5th year.
• 1% penetration of the $50-$60 billion dollar African-American Tourism and Convention business will generate $500-$600 million dollars per annum alone.
• AfriCana Village will be the destination of choice for African-American conventions to Toronto. African American
Meetings and Conventions is a $10 billion dollar business.
“The entire hotel/ tourism industry in this city will benefit from the proposed the AfriCana Village Project as it will be the lure that brings African American conventions here, our 200 room AfriCana Village Afri-centric/Caribbean themed boutique hotel can't accommodate 10,000 delegates/attendees, other hotels will benefit ” adds Mr. David.
Mr. David reports that AfriCana Village is in discussions with a number of potential investors at this time to raise $100 million in private capital, however they are primarily non-Canadians. Mr. David says he welcomes interest from Canadian developers and investors at this time, as he would like this project to be a Made in Canada project. If no serious Canadian investors step forward Mr. David is prepared to deal with international investors.
“It would be sad if we had to raise capital from outside Canada to develop this project. Canadian investors would be missing out on a ‘Winner’,” says David.
